Lives in the Balance, which is funding this documentary, is the non-profit organization founded by child psychologist Dr. Ross Greene. Lives in the Balance aims to foster collaboration and empathy, transform lives, and inspire change for all children (especially the most vulnerable), to heighten awareness of the detrimental and counterproductive effects of punitive interventions, and to address the systemic issues that impede our progress. The mission of Lives in the Balance is to provide vital, accessible resources and programs to caregivers of behaviorally challenging kids; to bring the plight of these kids into the public consciousness; to address the systemic issues that cause many of these kids to slip through the cracks; and to promote parenting and disciplinary practices that foster the better side of human nature in all children. Lisa Quijano Wolfinger has written, produced, directed and supervised a variety of films and television programs. She is currently the executive producer of Mercy Street, with co-creator David Zabel. She has worked in a wide range of genres, including historical drama, high-end documentaries, and reality. Notable work includes the critically acclaimed 3-hour docudrama special for History, Desperate Crossing, the Untold Story of the Mayflower, which was nominated for 2 primetime Emmy awards. The 2-hour special, Fire on the Mountain was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy and awarded the CINE Masters Series award. The 90-minute docudrama Witch Hunt was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy, and the docudrama mini-series Conquest of America was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and won a Gold medal at the New York Festival. She was the series director and senior producer for a 10 part drama series for Discovery about the Revolutionary War titled Forged in Fire.
Kirk Wolfinger is an Emmy and Peabody Award winning filmmaker and President of Lone Wolf Media. He has been making films since 1985 when he directed his first documentary, Black Magic, (winner of the American Film Festival's Blue Ribbon). Kirk recently produced 9/11 Inside the Pentagon and The Bomb for PBS; both garnered an outpouring of positive, critical acclaim. Kirk helped develop and produce the first season of Animal Planet's successful Ice Cold Gold Reality series in Greenland. He created a new reality entry, Yankee Jungle, also for Animal Planet, which has run for two seasons. In 2009 he released his 90-minute independent feature documentary about a high school football rivalry in Maine, The Rivals, which has received numerous awards including Best Picture (Phoenix Film Festival), Best Documentary (Los Angeles Real Film Festival), Audience Award (Wood's Hole Film Festival), and a Silver Chris (Columbus Film Festival). Kirk won a national Emmy for his NOVA/New York Times production of Bioterror in 2009. He also won a regional Emmy, for Coma: The Journey Back. He has also received a George F. Peabody Award, an American Film Festival Blue Ribbon, and the Independent Documentary Association Award.
Dr. Ross Greene is an internationally recognized child psychologist and acclaimed author. Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years and is now founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance. His research-based model – called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS), and described in his influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, and Raising Human Beings – has revolutionized the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in a vast array of settings.
